Course overview: We will be following the Algebra 1 Common Core Standards. This course will build upon middle school concepts and deepen students understanding of linear, exponential, and quadratic relationships through statistical models and problem solving. This class is a blended classroom. That means we use technology to help us learn Algebra. Students will need Internet access to complete her homework.
Topics to be covered:
Solving Equations
Systems of Equations
Polynomials
Quadratics Functions
Transformations & Functions
Exponential Functions
Data
Class Website:This will be your go-to spot for homework, important announcements, extra help resources, printable papers, and much more. Please use it frequently
Grading:All grades will be posted on JumpRope. Please check it regularly to examine your progress. You will have multiple opportunities in class and throughout the year to demonstrate your mastery of an outcome. Test and quizzes can only be made up 2 weeks after it was given. This will ensure you have had the appropriate amount of time to study and prepare.
Outcome Revision: All outcomes will be revisited multiple times throughout the unit and the course. If you wish to revise your current outcome, you will have the opportunity to demonstrate mastery on the next applicable assessment, midterm, and at the end of the school year. The midterm in January modelled after the NYS Regents Exam.
Homework: will be assigned nightly and checked in class daily, phone calls will be made to parents of students who are not completing homework. Homework is a place to continue learning outside of our classroom and is imperative for a student to succeed in this course, if you do not complete homework you are doing a disservice to yourself. We will have evidence each week copied directly from the homework (no adjustments made). If you are prepared, you will do well!
Most nights your homework may entail that you watch a video online and/or complete a set of problems in your notes. We will be using DeltaMath and Khan Academy for this, you will need access to the internet.
New York State Regents: This year you will take the Common Core Algebra 1 regents Exam in June. You must take and pass one math regents exam with a 65 or higher to graduate with a regents diploma. Our goal is to earn a 70, which makes you “Common Core Ready.”
Extra Help:If you are having trouble you should speak with me as soon as possible. This course moves quickly and it is incredibly important not to fall behind! As a student you are responsible of your academic performance. Make sure to take advantage of the help!
When? TBD Where? Room 304
Communication: This year I will be using Talking Points to keep in contact with you and your parent/guardian. This program allows communication to take place between text messaging and provides free translation. If you parent/guardian sends a message in spanish, for example, the program will translate for me - it’s awesome! Please do not hesitate to share any concerns over the school year, the sooner you communicate about any confusions or concerns, the sooner it can be cleared up and you can excel!
